Fans of Sarah Dessen and Gilmore Girls will fall in love with the heart and soul of Rosa Santos of the Sea, about a Cuban-American girl who wants to connect with her mysterious past as everyone else is concerned for her future. Rosa and her mother are handling the Santos family curse very differently. While dutiful Rosa has been non-stop in her pursuit to achieve success, her spontaneous mother keeps crashing back into her life like a hurricane. Rosa is too busy between dual-enrollment, her part-time job at the bodega, choosing a university to accept, and helping her abuela, their quirky small town's bruja, to get off track now. But the turbulent, forbidden waters start calling her after a delivery takes her to the marina. Beyond the horizon is her family's island no one will tell her about, and here at the harbor is the silent, brooding sailor who's just as curious about her. The catch is that the women in her family are bad omens for boys from the sea. Just ask her mother. With graduation approaching and Rosa churning up a heat wave and new dreams, the prospect of leaving for college is complicated by the political relationship between the U.S. and Cuba unexpectedly changing.
